Another beautiful creation by Hatsukokoro, a collaborative project that brings together some of Japan’s most skilled blacksmiths, sharpeners, and craftsmen. By working with renowned artisans across the country, Hatsukokoro delivers knives that offer exceptional performance and finishing at a fair price. While these are not entry-level blades, the value in grind quality, heat treatment, and overall attention to detail often exceeds what you’ll find in significantly more expensive knives.
This knife comes from the Ryuhyo Migaki collection and is handcrafted in Echizen. The blade features a finely polished Migaki Damascus Suminagashi finish. While the mirror polish can be difficult to fully capture in photos—often appearing slightly darker or more matte—the blade is in fact highly polished, with a near mirror-like surface that reveals layered damascus patterns as light moves across it. In person, the finish is elegant, refined, and subtly striking rather than loud or flashy.
Even more impressive, Yauji completes every step himself—from forging and grinding to finishing and sharpening—ensuring total control over quality and consistency.
In terms of performance, the Ryuhyo line uses a high-performance SG2 (R2) powdered steel core, hardened to approximately 63 HRC, delivering excellent edge retention and long-lasting sharpness. The blade geometry is ultra-thin, fitting squarely into the “laser” category, making it ideal for precise, low-resistance cutting.
